The much awaited surgery of conjoined twins Veena and Vani may soon take place as their parents have agreed to give their consent, despite doctors warning them that the operation could be risky.
The parents of the 13-year-old twins told the Times of India:
“Even if there is a 50% success rate, we would like to give our consent for the surgery for the twins whether it is taken up at AIIMS, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), London, or anywhere in the world. They are now growing and it pains us to see that they cannot even walk a few steps without getting tired or climb a few stairs properly even with two people helping them. Hence, only a surgery to separate them can solve the problem."
Last week, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) declared that a surgical separation of the twins could be highly dangerous and fatal for both.
This report from the AIIMS doctors is only the capstone on long years of uncertainty in Veena’s and Vani’s lives, despite the amount of attention their case has received from doctors.
