Sheik Reshma and her family in Nizamabad allege that they are facing a social boycott from villagers of the ‘majority’ community as officials are not letting her family construct a house in the village. They have written to the State Minorities Commission seeking intervention.

According to a report in Times of India, the Muslim family from Badsi village in Nizamabad district was boycott by the villagers after the family refused to give Rs.50,000 demanded by the village officials to let them construct a house.

Reshma claims that the boycott started when few members of village development committee did not allow them to construct a house on their own plot. The boycott was reportedly announced at a Hanuman temple close to family’s house which is under construction.

“We are helpless, despite of all the necessary clearances by the administration the house structure was demolished overnight,'' Reshma, a BEd graduate, told TOI. “My father lost his eyesight and we are not that rich,” she added.

Reshma added,'' All this started over six months ago with some influential locals had instructed  residents avoid us. They even instructed people to not to buy good from our family store and we are also not allowed to use autos and other forms of transport in the village.”

The issue came to light on December 28 when Reshma filed a case in the State Minorities Commission (SMC) seeking its intervention.

District officials told TOI, that they were aware of the incident and have launched an investigation. 

"We have received information and are ascertaining the facts," Yogita Rani told TOI.
