Hyderabad traffic police booked nearly 1,000 cases against traffic violators under the newly implemented Penalty Points System.
Police from all the three Commissionerates- Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda have booked over 1,065 cases, following its implementation.
“Today as many as 1,065 cases were registered against motorists for various traffic violations and 1,188 points were awarded to them,” said Hyderabad Traffic Police Joint Commissioner V. Ravinder, reported The Hindu.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy said that this road safety improvement system is being introduced with a view to transforming Hyderabad city into a safe place for commuting and driving.
“This system is being introduced for the first time in India, to inculcate self-discipline among motorists,” he said to, The Hindu.
The penalty point system was introduced on August 1.
Under this new system, penalty points have been fixed for different traffic violations. If the motorist exceeds 12 penalty points, their driving license would be suspended for a year.
After having a driving license suspended, if the person accumulates 12 more points, the license will suspended for two years and then for three years.
Motorists holding learners' license stand to have it cancelled if they reach a tally of five penalty points, reported The Times of India.
The government order passed reads, "At any point of time, if the cumulative tally of the penalty points accrued by a driver having a license exceeds the limit of twelve (12) points during the preceding block period of 24 months, his/her driving license shall be suspended for one year from the date of accrual of twelve points. On suspension of the driving license, the accrued penalty points shall cease to subsist."
The order also says, "If a person has accumulated several points for violations, he shall get an opportunity to reduce the tally by three penalty points by undergoing defensive training course or motor vehicle accident prevention course from an institution recognized by the transport department. This facility shall be restricted to two times in a continuous period of two years".
This penalty points system is amended with the Telangana Motor Vehicle Act-1986.
