Twenty two-year-old Mounika is battling for life, after her brother stabbed her with a knife on Saturday for marrying a Dalit man against the family’s wishes.  

According to reports, Ch Mounika, a resident of Veerpur village in Bejjanki mandal, studying Degree final year, married her classmate Sollu Sai from the same mandal 15 days ago.

Mounika’s parents objected to the wedding, as the boy belonged to a lower caste. Mounika belongs to a Backward Class. Despite opposition from the family, they got married at Arya Samaj in Hyderabad.

After the wedding, Mounika, was living with her husband in Thotapalli village. However, three days ago, Mounika’s mother went to Thotapalli carrying a pesticide bottle. She threatened to kill herself if Mounika did not return home, reported The Hindu.

After taking Mounika to their home, her parents allegedly harassed and beat her. Unable to bear the harassment, she called up her husband on Saturday, asking him to rescue her.

However, as she was on the phone, her brother Nagaraju got agitated. In a fit of rage, he took a knife and stabbed her in the stomach. After hearing her cries, the villagers noticed Mounika lying in a pool of blood and shifted her to Karimnagar area hospital with a knife still stuck in her body.

Mounika’s condition is reportedly critical. Bejjanki police have registered a case against her brother.

Caste related killings continue unabated across India

In April last year, 25-year-old Madhukar, a Dalit man was killed brutally in Khanapur village in Telangana’s Peddapalli district.

Madhukar, a resident of Kathalpur was killed for being in a relationship with an upper caste girl. The duo wanted to get married, and Madhukar went to her house with the proposal. However, two days later, he was found mutilated in Khanapur outskirts.

Though the police initially downplayed the issue, Dalit organizations protested against the incident, following which police arrested six persons accused of murdering Madhukar.
