The News Minute | October 20, 2014 | 08.45 am ISTA survey in Telangana has found that over 50 per cent of its class X students in both government and private schools cannot read and write in English. More surprisingly, the low percentage looks to be a direct result of incapable teachers in over 5000 schools in the State.Around 70 to 80 per cent of teachers in schools across five districts were found unfit to teach English, reported New Indian Express. Many of them were not aware of the curriculum. Without teaching programmes to improve the quality of teachers, even private schools have been left behind in terms of efforts to improve teaching knowledge, said the report. The problem lies with the recruitment of teachers where tests only check the aptitude of the teachers and not their teaching ability.Salaries were another concern since school managements would prefer a teacher paid Rs 7,000 than an experienced teacher demanding Rs 15,000 a month, said a principal according to the report.
