The News Minute| November 21, 2014| 05.00 pm ISTCall for celebrations to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of Vellupillai Prabhakaran, the slain LTTE leader by MDMK leader Vaiko has created trouble with a call for a ban by Subramanian Swamy. On Friday, Subramanian Swamy raised the issue in a meeting with the Home Minister Rajnath Singh saying that the directive should be issue against the Tamil Nadu government to prevent the meeting to commemorate the birth anniversary of the leader. "These celebrations are being organised by MDMK leader Vaiko. MDMK must be ejected from the NDA and Vaiko should be locked up under the National Security Act," Swamy said in a press release according to PTI. He also said that the directive against celebrations must be issued under Article 256, which will force the state to comply with the laws of the Parliament. On Wednesday, Vaiko told people to burst crackers and offer special prayers at 7.18 pm, the exact time of Prabhakaran’s birth. He had said that the celebrations across the world where Tamils lived should “echo the cause of Tamil Eelam”. Prabhakaran was killed while fighting a prolonged war with the Sri Lankan army on May 18, 2009. The LTTE has been accused of assassinating Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. However, Vaiko has been repeatedly calling for celebrations to mark the occasion over the last year. The MDMK has not yet received permission from the police to hold any celebrations in Chennai or across Tamil Nadu. Whether the outcome is positive or not, the MDMK plans to hold a public meeting in Chennai on November 27th considering chances that permission for the original event falls through. Vaiko, who has been fighting for the Tamil Eelam cause in Sri Lankan for over a decade now, had spent a number of days in the jungles of Jaffna with LTTE leader Prabhakaran.In May, 2014, the ban against the LTTE group issued in 1991 in which the outfit was labeled an ‘Unlawful Association’ was extended to another five years.
