Written by : TNM Staff

Tamil Nadu can hope for some relief with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)  predicting light to moderate rains at isolated places in the state over the next four days. On Monday, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places.

Salem, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Karur, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli districts will see light to moderate rains over the next few days.

These light showers are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorm with gusty winds, with wind speed reaching 40-50 Kmph, and lightning. The rains however, may not reach Chennai, but skies are likely to remain partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 37 and 29 degree Celsius respectively, in the city.

Kothagiri in Nilgiris District has recorded highest amount of rainfall at 7 cm as of May 12. This is followed by Gudalur in Theni District with 4 cm and Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore District with 3 cm.

The IMD in its midday summary and forecast bulletin on Saturday said that due to the current western disturbance and ongoing moisture incursion from Arabian Sea, rainfall and thunderstorm activity are likely to increase over peninsular India from Saturday, with some isolated areas seeing heavy rainfall.

When cyclone Fani skipped Tamil Nadu, a few places in Tamil Nadu saw heat wave warning last week with a few places recording day temperatures of over 40 degree Celsius.

Thiruthani recorded the highest temperature of 43.5 degree Celsius on May 8 while Karur Paramathi recorded a temperature of 42 degrees. Trichy (41.9), Chennai Airport (41.2) and Vellore (41.1) also recorded high temperatures through Monday. Madurai, Palayamkottai and Salem too sizzled on Monday with temperatures of 40.8, 40.5 and 40.5 degree Celsius respectively.
