WB Congress gaffe on Rajiv birth anniversary: Tweets out controversial 'big tree' quote

Written by : TNM Staff

When official handles make a big blunder, Twitter shakes.

And shook it did, when the West Bengal Congress, apparently not really understanding the meaning the infamous Rajiv Gandhi quote, tweeted out this: “When a big tree falls, the ground shakes.”

The tweet has since been removed, but several screenshots are doing the rounds.

The statement was made by Rajiv Gandhi in the aftermath of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. In a speech meant to pacify Congress rioters, he said that the riots were a fallout of the assassination, and the statement continues to be seen by many as a justification of the deadly pogrom.

The Congress party, expectedly, has been slammed online.
