Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who managed to score 263 runs, with two centuries in the just-concluded three-match ODI series against New Zealand, reached 889 points which is the best ever by an Indian cricketer.

In the process, he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 887 points, which was achieved in the year 1997.

“The previous highest points tally of 887 was managed by Sachin Tendulkar in 1998 and by Kohli earlier this year,” the ICC said in a statement.

After guiding India to an unprecedented seventh straight ODI series win on Sunday, Virat Kohli reclaimed the No 1 spot in the latest ICC rankings for ODI batsmen. He already occupies the pole position in the T20 rankings.

Virat spearheaded India’s batting with a breezy innings of 117, which was his 32nd century in ODIs and contributed to India’s total of 337. The Kiwis fell short by six runs in the final match of the series. This is India's best run in ODIs as far as bilateral series are concerned.

This was not the only personal milestone that Virat’s century managed to achieve on Sunday.

He also became the fastest to score 9,000 runs in ODI cricket on Sunday.

Also for the calendar year 2017, Kohli scored over 1,425 runs which makes him the record holder for the most runs scored by a captain in ODIs within a period of 12 months. Former Australian great Ricky Ponting held the record of 1424 runs in 2007, the year the Aussies won their third successive World Cup.

He also became one of the few players to register 2,000 runs in a year across formats for the second successive year.

Virat is also second in the list of most ODI tons, after Tendulkar’s 49. He has a total of 32 ODI 100s to his name.
