There needs to be a public debate on hate crimes and the necessity of a law to control such crimes, says a retired Supreme Court judge.
Retired Supreme Court judge Mukundakam Sharma said on Saturday said that the assault on two north-eastern youths by local people in Gurgaon was “deplorable” and that there was a need to publicly debate crimes arising from racial prejudice.
He said that the provision to reserve 10 percent of funds from each union ministry for the development of the north-eastern states was not effectively utilised.
On October 15, two men from Nagaland were beaten up in Gurgaon, and a day before that, three Manipuri students.
