Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday dared the Opposition to begin the debate over the demonetisation, the issue which has rocked Parliament since the winter session began on November 16.

"The Opposition disrupts proceedings for one reason or the other. I challenge them to begin the debate if they have courage," Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha.

The Finance Minister also accused the Opposition of raising the issue for publicity.

"They raise the issue everyday for two minutes during Zero Hour for television coverage. They don't bother whether discussion continues or not," he said.

Jaitley was speaking during Zero Hour after the opposition parties created a ruckus over the demonetisation issue.

Earlier on the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked BJP MPs to campaign against black money and encourage people to embrace a digital and cashless economy.

"The Prime Minister thanked people for their support to demonetisation and asked the MPs to encourage them to go for cashless economy," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said.

"He (Modi) said the way people are informed about EVMs during elcetions, a similar approach should be adopted for encouraging people to go for digital and cashless economy," Kumar said.

Kumar said the BJP Parliamentary Party passed a resolution hailing people for supporting the demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes that has caused a widespread cash crunch.

Another resolution was passed to ensure smooth functioning of both houses of Parliament.
