IIM-Ahmedabad/ Courtesy: WikipediaAfter authorities and alumni of various Indian Institute of Managements (IIM) criticised the proposed legislation which allows the human resource development (HRD) ministry to take sweeping control of the autonomous body, the Centre is likely to redraft the bill.As the bill is expected to be redrafted, it is unlikely that it will be introduced in the monsoon session of the Parliament which is scheduled from July 21, according to a report in Live Mint.Many disapproved the current form of the Bill as it will turn the B-schools into sheer “operating centres”, with important decisions being vested in the hands of the Union government.Vamshidhar Gothikonda, an alumnus of IIM-Bangalore, said there was no need for a Bill to control IIMs, and if there was one, it needed to be redrafted with an explanation from the government as to why was it necessary, the report said.IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Lucknow had asked the HRD Minister Smriti Irani to extend the deadline for seeking public opinion on the Bill to July 31.“In a way, reworking the bill seems a must at this point of time. If we keep the controversies aside, still some suggestions need to be looked at with favour and this means reworking the bill,” the official was quoted as saying by the paper.Three sections in the Bill—3(k), 35 and 36— needed to be relooked as IIMs have objected  to them, as it gives the Union government power to set rules for IIMs, said the official.
