Written by : TNM Staff

Police in Kerala’s Kannur district arrested a woman along her husband on Monday for allegedly torturing her mother over a property dispute.

The accused were remanded to judicial custody.

The attacker has been identified as Chandramathi and the victim has been identified as Karthyayani, both residents of Payyannur.

Police made the arrest following a complaint by Chandramathi’s brother Venugopal on November 24. In his complaint, Venugopal told police that her mother was tortured by  Chandramathi over a property dispute.

Venugopal also submitted mobile phone footage to the police which allegedly shows Chandramathi attacking her mother with her hands and a broom for urinating on her own clothes. The mobile video, which is shot from a distance, shows two persons in a dark room silhouetted against a doorway. One of them can be seen hitting the other with a broom multiple times. The attacker is seen hitting the other person on her head using her hands.

However, Karthyayani denied that her daughter had assaulted her, saying she was well taken care of.

She was taken for a medical examination following the complaint.

When asked by the police about the incident, Chandramathi is heard saying that it is the responsibility of the son to take care of the mother.

A case was registered against Chandramathy and her husband Govindan under various sections of the IPC including 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), police told PTI.
