Does Kerala's Muslim League disallow members from lighting lamps?

Written by : TNM

After multiple controversies over Kerala Education Minister and Indian Union Muslim League leader PK Abdu Rabb’s refusal to light the lamp at different functions, now the party is witnessing a clash on this issue. While speaking to media on Sunday in Kozhikode League leader and Member of Parliament ET Muhammed Basheer said that IUML’s policy is not to light lamps as it goes against their religious beliefs. However another League leader MK Muneer, Minister for Social Welfare and Panchayat denied Basheer's claims and said party cannot take a unilateral decision.  He also declared that it is one’s personal choice whether to light lamp or not and said that League can’t take such a narrow minded decision.    Earlier at a function when Abdu Rabb declined to light the lamp, actor Mammootty who was also at the event, was irked over this act and he told Rabb that lighting a lamp was neither for nor against any religion or religious beliefs.
