The News Minute | March 31, 2015 | 11.52 am ISTThe Karnataka High Court has made it clear that the state government cannot make the proposed breaking up of the BBMP as an excuse to avoid conducting polls.Hearing the case on Tuesday, Justice B V Nagarathna told the state government to conduct the polls to the BBMP as the term of the present Council ended on April 22 and it would be impossible to complete the exercise of breaking up the BBMP into smaller corporations without the permission of the Council. For this reason, it was necessary to hold elections to the Council.Justice Nagarathna also said that the breaking up of the BBMP could not be carried out overnight, and that the procedure specified under Section 4 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act was a time-consuming process.
