Prohibitory orders in Bijapur after clashes during BJP's celebration

The News Minute | May 27, 2014 | 12.06 pm ISTClashes broke out between BJP supporters and vegetable vendors in Bijapur town in north Karnataka on Monday, during a victory procession to celebrate the prime minister’s swearing-in, even as the event was going on.Police sources who did not wish to be named, told The News Minute that the violence broke out when the BJP procession was being taken out from the Siddeshwara temple to the Ambedkar Circle. Police sources also said that during the procession, a song with with the words "mandir wahi banayenge" was being played. When BJP supporters tried to smear gulaal (colour) on some vegetable vendors at the Gandhi Chowk Market around 6.30 pm, some of the vegetable vendors, belonging to a particular community objected.Soon, the altercation turned into clashes which resulted in prohibitory orders being imposed for three days. The police took over two hours to bring the clashes under control, police sources said.
