As Jayalalithaa's health worsens, Karnataka steps up security

Karnataka Police have stepped up security in the state, especially in Bengaluru, over the deteriorating health condition of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. 

In a statement, Chennai’s Apollo Hospital said that Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening. She was admitted to hospital on September 22, and has been there since. 

In the 12 hours since the announcement, security arrangements in Tamil Nadu as well as its neighbouring states have been beefed up. 

Bengaluru Commissioner NS Megharikh told The News Minute that the police have beefed up security across the city since Monday morning, as a precautionary measure. 

“So far, no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in Bengaluru. Beefing up security is a normal procedure. People need not panic,” he said. 

Bengaluru City Police have made elaborate security arrangements with 250 Hoysala vehicles and 400 Cheethas bikes deployed for patrolling across the city. 

Additional Commissioner of Police KSR Charan Reddy tweeted that the situation in the city is normal and urged people not to pay heed to rumours. 

Police have also stepped up security measures at the borders between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, especially Attitbele on the outskirts of Bengaluru and Chamarajnagar district. 

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSTRC) temporarily suspended its services to Tamil Nadu since 7 am on Monday, after stones were pelted at two buses plying between the two states.
