IMD predicts more showers for Hyderabad, even as rain brings respite

Written by : TNM Staff

Residents of Hyderabad, who were reeling under the heat, received some respite in the form of pre-monsoon showers across parts of the city on Saturday and Sunday evening.

According to reports, the maximum rainfall of 6.25mm was recorded in Saidabad, followed by 5.5 mm in Narayanguda, 3 mm in Amberpet, 2.75 mm in Golconda and Jubilee Hills, 2.5 mm in Srinagar colony and 0.5 - 1 mm in parts of Secunderabad.

Even as the overall temperature of the city dropped by 1 or 2 degree Celsius due to the rain, officials of the Indian Meterological Department (IMD) are predicting more showers.

"It all depends on the moisture in the atmosphere. At present, due to winds from Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, there is enough moisture, which is causing the pre-monsoon showers. We have issued a thunderstorm warning for a few places in Hyderabad on Monday,” an IMD official told Telangana Today.

Skymet Weather reported that the reason for the rainfall was a trough, that was running from Maharashtra, across Karnataka and the Rayalaseema area in Andhra, which had been infusing moisture over the region.

Earlier, a cyclonic storm that was brewing in the southwest Bay of Bengal, which fed off moisture in its surroundings, had resulted in the sharp escalation in the temperature.

However, experts also say that the present relief is temporary, and the temperature is expected to shoot up again soon.

"These showers will occur during the latter afternoon or evening only. Though the showers will provide significant relief, it will only be momentary," an expert from Skymet told the Times of India.

Earlier this month, with the temperatures soaring in Telangana, the state government declared an early start to the summer holidays for all government and private schools.

Hyderabad recorded its hottest day this year on April 17 with the maximum temperature touching 43 degree Celsius.
