Doctors at Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad who have been treating 20-year-old Ravali, who was set on fire by her ex-boyfriend have stated that her condition is ‘grave.’ The girl was attacked by a man, identified as Anwesh, on Wednesday allegedly after she refused to marry him. He had been stalking her and harassing her by asking her to marry him.

Ravali had sustained 70 percent burns after Anwesh threw petrol on her and set her on fire.

Doctors at the hospital have now expressed concern that her condition is deteriorating. "Despite best efforts for the last 26+ hours, she seems to be deteriorating and requiring medicines to maintain blood pressure and is requiring high ventilatory support to maintain oxygen saturation .Her prognosis at present is very grave," (sic) the hospital said in a statement.

Ravali and Anwesh were classmates studying in Vagdevi College in Warangal. The duo allegedly were in a relationship earlier. Hanamkonda police said that on Wednesday morning Anwesh stopped Ravali while she was on the way to college. He had again threatened her and asked her to marry him. When she refused, he poured a petrol, which he’d been concealing in a bottle in his bag, on her and set her on fire. The incident took place in Nayeem Nagar.

Ravali wasi first rushed to MGM hospital in Warangal, but was later shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad at around 3 pm, as she had sustained third degree burns. Upon arrival doctors had intubated her and put her on ventilatory support as there was extensive damage to her airway and lungs from the fumes. This had resulted in the development of laryngeal edema (excess fluid collection in the ‘voice box’) and rendered her unable to breathe normally.

Intubation is a method by which an artificial tube is introduced into a person’s airway to help them breathe, when they are unable to do so on their own for any number of reasons.

The accused, Anwesh was apprehended by police and booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 354 D (stalking) of IPC. Hanamkonda ACP Chandraiah had earlier told TNM that Anwesh had been harassing Ravali for sometime now.
