The News Minute | February 23, 2015 | 12.20 pm ISTA bi-annual festival held in Madurai saw thousands of people throng the area in order to get their hands on at least some of the biriyani made from 2100 kg of rice at the event. Made using 83 goats and nearly 300 roosters, devotees found themselves visiting the Sri Muniyandi Sami temple in Tirumangalam to taste this dish, reported New Indian Express. Based on donations they made, people visiting the temple were handed over biriyani in small buckets or plastic packets, said the report. A village which was originally not famous for its biryani but for the origins of the famous Muniyandi Vilas hotels visible across TN, stories recall that it was the village deity , Muniyandi Sami who gave Subbaiah Naidu the idea of beginning a hotel. He soon went on to start his first hotel in the 1930s. The hotel practice which runs in families belonging to the village is a custom that each child takes up by slowly learning the tricks of the trade before opening their own hotels. Thus , the festival itself forms a sort of thanksgiving by all hotel owners to Muniyandi Sami which is conducted in the form of a two-day festival which has been going on for the last 80 years, said the report.
