Parents in Madurai perform child marriages to thwart young love with outside caste

The News Minute | September 12, 2014 | 10:45 am ISTIn a village in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, parents marry off their young children when they find them falling in adolescent love outside their caste.In Usilampatti, Madurai , many who belong to the community' Piramalai Kallar' are known to have one of the most oldest lineage in Tamil Nadu, said The Times of India. Known to pride itself for maintaining honor and pride within its community, the clash between these entrenched values and newly found technology like televisions and mobile phones that the new generation is exposed to has created a difficult situation. When parents realize that their children are falling in love outside their caste, they get them married under age, said the report. Madurai has recorded 35 child marriages in its district this year until July. Men migrating from Usilmpatti to other areas for work get their girl children married soon, said the Deputy Superintendent, K Saravanakumar, according to the report.
