Government to soon grant citizenship to Hindu migrants from Bangladesh

Written by : TNM

The BJP government is all set to grant citizenship to Hindus from Bangladesh and will submit a policy document to the Supreme Court in this regard soon.According to a report done by The Hindu, this document will decide the fate of thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus living in 18 states as many have been trying to escape religious persecution. The petition filed by two NGOs suggests that a refugee status can first be granted which can later be converted to citizenship as well. The focus would mainly be on Assam where animosity towards Bangladeshi refugees is a strong political issue.BJP President, Amit Shah has promised that once the party comes to power in Assam, it will give all the Bangladeshi Hindus citizenship. This policy has been the major plank of the BJP campaign for the 2016 Assam Assembly polls. The previous UPA government treaded extremely cautiously on the case as it involved granting rights on the basis of religion. The policy document to be submitted is in response to a case filed in 2012 by NGOs - Swajan and Bimalangshu Roy Foundation, which pleaded that Hindus and other minorities who had migrated to India should not be specifically categorised as illegal migrants and sent back as they were trying to escape religious persecution. Read more at: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/govt-set-to-grant-citizenship-to-hindu-immigrants-from-bangladesh/article7190826.ece
