Delhi traffic cop arrested for throwing brick at woman after she refused to pay bribe

Written by : TNM

A traffic cop in Delhi has been arrested and suspended for throwing a brick at a woman after she requested a receipt when she was asked to pay a fine. The woman was stopped by the traffic policeman, Satish Chand, for jumping a signal while returning home after picking her daughter from school on a two- wheeler. The cop allegedly asked for what seemed to be a bribe, leading to an argument between the two. NDTV quoted the woman as saying, “The policeman asked me for my registration papers and license and demanded Rs 200 for jumping the red light. I said I want a receipt but he refused to give it." According to the woman’s daughter, who was present at the scene, the officer tried to stop the vehicle and threw a stone at it, following which her mother retaliated. In a recording taken by a passer- by, the woman is seen hurling a brick at the policeman’s bike, who, in turn, hurls a brick back, hitting the woman’s back. Here is the video courtesy NDTV.  "Head Constable Satish Chandra has been arrested and is being questioned at the Tughlak Road police station. Relevant IPC sections will be registered against him after the inquiry," Joint Commissioner of Police M.K. Meena told IANS. Police chief BS Bassi also told the channel that "Strict action will be taken against him. We regret that such a shameful act has been committed by a traffic policeman." The woman has injuries on her back and hands and was taken to the hospital for treatment. With inputs from IANS
