Boat capsizes on river Ganga, many feared dead

Biswajeet Banerjee| The News Minute| August 5, 2014| 9.20 pm ISTIn a tragic mishap reported from prime minister Narendra Modi’s Parliamentary constituency, 30 people were feared downed in the flooded Ganga river in Rohania area in Mirjapur on Tuesday.The incident occurred near Betwar village in Rohania area when the boat was coming from Mirzapur.Mirzapur District Magistrate Anil Dingra, while talking to local media persons on Tuesday evening has confirmed death of 30 people in the boat mishap. He said that around 55 to 60 people were on the boat of which only 14 could be saved. '' There is very less chances of any survival in the accident due to sunset,'' he said while adding that the death toll could increase. The boat was carrying people from Chunar in Mirzapur district and crossing the Ganga when it capsized mid-stream. Senior district officials have rushed to the spot and rescue operation was underway.Meanwhile Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has expressed his condolences over the accident and has directed the officials to launch a rescue operation. Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan said that ex-gratia amount would be provided to the family of deceased.Police divers and a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have also been pressed into service to locate and rescue any survivors, an official told IANS. He, however, said the possibility of any survivors was very little because night had set in. The Ganga is in spate these days and the water level in the region is rising menacingly every day.
