Kochi is on a cholera alert

The News Minute | June 23, 2014 | 8:18 AM IST The Ernakulam health department has issued a warning to contain the spread of cholera in the district. As many as 11, 035 people reportedly had diarrhoea from January to May this year.The Health Department says it is on high vigil, and also requested people to be safe. They say that the diarrhoea results from eating food or drinking water that is contaminated with a bacteria called vibrio cholera. The officials say that as cholera is a water and foodborne disease, people should be extra vigilant. In Ernakulam General Hospital almost 250-300 people have been seeking treatment for fever at the hospital during recent days. On Sunday alone 880 patients with viral fever asked for treatment in Ernakulam, while 37 were admitted to various hospitals.Data says that more than 50,000 people have sought treatment for viral fever from January to May this year in the district. Seven chikungunya cases and three typhoid case have also been confirmed.
