Kerala man hacks 20-year-old college student after she breaks off their relationship

In one more incident in the growing list of women killed by men they rejected, a 20-year-old woman was hacked in Ernakulam on Tuesday evening. Though severely injured, she survived the attack.

On Tuesday, 26-year-old Amal, a resident of Tripunithura, hacked 20-year-old Ambily with a machete. According to the police, Amal had been in a relationship with Ambily for over four years, but she had recently backed out of the relationship. 

Irked by this, Amal, who is also Ambily’s neighbor, followed her while she was on her way back home from college and attacked her. Ambily, a student in the final year of her undergraduate degree, sustained injuries on her shoulders, elbow and palms, and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she is undergoing treatment. Police said that her condition is now stable. 

"According to the culprit's statements, they had been in a relationship for the past four years. As far as we understand, their families were also not on good terms," Udayamperoor Sub-Inspector Shibin told The News Minute. 

Amal was nabbed by the police soon after he attacked Ambily, and a case of attempt to murder under section 307 of the IPC has been filed against him. Amal will be produced before the Tripunithura Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday.

The incident in Ernakulam comes just a week after a Kottayam student was burnt by alive by a man she had rejected. On Wednesday last week, 21-year-old Lekshmi, a college student in Kottayam, was set ablaze by Adarsh in the college library. Adarsh also immolated himself after he set Lekshmi on fire. Though some bystanders tried to prevent the incident and to help Lekshmi and Adarsh, both were severely burnt, and succumbed to their injuries later that day.
