Kerala High Court rejected the state government's petition to stay the Thrissur Vigilance Court's order asking VACB to file a case against Excise Minister K Babu who subsequently resigned on moral grounds. The petition was apparently the Chandy government's last ditch effort to not accept Babu's resignation and thereby lessen the fallout of the bar bribery scam on the UDF's prospects in the upcoming assembly elections in April.

K Babu on Saturday handed over his resignation to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Babu’s resignation was in the wake of Thrissur Vigilance court asking for an FIR to be registered against him.

Babu said that even when there is no prima facie evidence against him, a PIL was filed in court based on a CD of an interview with whistleblower Biju Ramesh on a TV channel. He further said that Biju Ramesh had till now not revealed the exact date when Rs 50 lakh was supposedly handed over to him as alleged. 

"How can a liquor baron forget the day he handed over such a huge sum," Babu asked.
