Farmers in Karnataka’s Mandya district have held the Chief Minister responsible for farmers’ suicides. According to a report by Kannada news channel Public TV, members of farmers’ groups have accused the Karnataka government of pushing farmers to commit suicide, and have lodged a complaint against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Maddur police station. In the last two days, three sugarcane-growing farmers have committed suicide unable to repay their debts. Sixty-year-old Ninge Gowda on Thursday set his farm on fire and jumped into it after money lenders pestered him to repay his loan. Sugarcane growers said that farmers had committed suicide as they did not get the appropriate price for their produce.They said that the government has not taken any measures to address their grievances and hence, alleged that Siddaramaiah was responsible for the suicides. They demanded that action be initiated against him.
