Two days after a special legislature session passed a resolution stating that Karnataka could not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka is set to file a plea in the Supreme Court on Monday.

The plea is to modify the Supreme Court order dated September 20 that asked Karnataka to release 6000 cusecs of water to its neighbouring state Tamil Nadu. 

In a special session held on September 23, both the Houses of the legislature had mandated that Cauvery water shall be drawn only for meeting the drinking water needs of Bengaluru and other towns.

According to The New Indian Express, Karnataka is likely to plead the court to defer the release of water until the storage levels in the reservoirs improve.

Karnataka Water Resources Minister MB Patil and Chief Secretary Aravind Jadhav met State’s legal team headed by F S Nariman in New Delhi on Sunday to formulate the State’s legal strategy to avert contempt of court proceedings in the light of the resolution.

The report says that Karnataka is likely to plea the court to not fix tight schedule for the release of water and assure that the government will make good the deficit at the end of the season.

“The State government has proposed to move an application before the SC on Monday seeking an appropriate modification of the interim order dated September 20, permitting Karnataka to account for water before the end of the season in January 2017, instead of accounting on 27.09.2016,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.

Deccan Chronicle reports that with the BJP’s support, the government is hoping to put pressure on Modi to prevent the formation of Cauvery Water Management Board.
