Several films have skipped theatrical releases and opted for an OTT release, amid the pandemic. However, the makers of Mohanlal’s big-budget period film Marakkar- Arabikadalinte Simham announced on June 18, Friday that the movie will hit the big screens on August 12, 2021, on the occasion of Onam. Mohanlal took to Twitter on Friday to share the news with fans. “We sincerely hope that we will be able to present to you the 'Marakkar' as an Onam release this coming August 12th, with the hope that your prayers and support will be forthcoming,” the translation of Mohanlal’s tweet read.

The film’s producer Antony Perumbavoor also shared a note hoping that the magnum opus could have a festival release on Onam. He also added that the team is moving forward with prayers and support from fans. Earlier, the makers had slated the movie for release on May 13. However, it had to be postponed in the wake of the second wave of COVID-19.

Marakkar was originally scheduled to hit the big screens on March 26, 2020. However, like many other movies, the makers couldn’t release the film due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The film was then set to release on March 26, 2021, but once again, the team pushed the release to a later date, citing that the movie might have a better response if it was released on Eid.

Marakkar features an ensemble cast that includes actors Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Suniel Shetty, Keerthi Suresh, Arjun Sarja, Suhasini, Prabhu, Siddique, Nedumudi Venu, Innocent, Mukesh, Pranav Mohanlal and Kalyani Priyadarshan, among others. Spearheaded by filmmaker Priyadarshan, Marakkar bagged the National Award for the best feature film of 2019. The movie also received awards for best special effects and best costume design. It is to be noted that although the movie is yet to hit the big screens, the crew had completed post-production in 2019, and hence the film was eligible for the National Award for 2019. The plot of the period drama revolves around Kunjali Marakkar IV, the naval chief of the Zamorin.
