In an exclusive interview to The News Minute, People’s Welfare Front’s Chief Ministerial candidate and DMDK leader Vijayakant opens up about party ideology, the DMK and AIADMK duopoly and his Chief ministerial post.

He sums up his ideology: “Employment to all, get rid of corruption completely, get rid of poverty by providing basic necessities – food, water, shelter,” but notes that when it comes to getting shelter, there will be a fair amount of corruption to deal with. On his changing constituencies from Vridhachalam to Rishivandhiyam to Ulundurpet, “Whichever constituency has more villages, I try contesting from there. Won’t I not win? I won last time. It’s all a matter of 5 years. I have not robbed people of even a pie.”

An alliance with the PWF is the road to a less corrupt government, according to Vijayakant. He opens up about the allegations of money offered to him - “by the BJP, the AIADMK and the DMK, and the BJP even offered a CM post along with the money, but I went with the PWF”, he says.

On opinion polls, Vijayakant felt that the overpowering narrative was either Jayalalithaa or Karunanidhi winning, and said the judgment better be left to May 19th. Alluding to a Tamil saying, he said, “if you vote for these people (DMK and AIADMK), it is like jumping into the river riding a sandhorse.”

Dismissing memes and talk of his health, he said Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa needs to be asked about their health first. He said it didn’t matter to him how he was perceived.

Vijayakant signed off his chat with The News Minute calling the Jayalalithaa government “a humbug government” and that the freebies are simply a means to a quick win.
