The News Minute | July 6, 2014 | 6.53 pm ISTSo it turns out that India is not the only country with judges who have bizarre attitudes towards rape and rape convicts.According to a report in the Hull Daily Mail, the judge who sentenced the man was rather unhappy that the man had not pleaded guilty to the offence so that he “could have passed a lighter sentence”.Judge Micheal Mettyear was reported as saying: “"It is a great shame you did not have the courage to say, 'I have made a terrible mistake and I am sorry'. That would have made it much easier for her and I could have passed a lighter sentence."Lee Setford was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of raping a sleeping woman in his house. The jury took around two hours to unanimously convict Setford, who was convicted for battery in 2009."She was a pretty girl who you fancied. You simply could not resist. You had sex with her."To be fair to the judge, he was sympathetic to the rape survivor: "She was clearly upset at the time," said Judge Mettyear. "The consequences continued. She was unable to work for a while. She has had to take anti-depressants. She has lost her cheerfulness and outgoing spirit."He also said that had Setford pleaded guilty, the woman would not have had to go through the ordeal again in court.
