Even as Telangana recovered from heavy rains that lashed the state recently, a fresh spell has begun as the MeT department on Saturday predicted activity for the next one week over.

The fresh spell of rains is likely to continue the `excess rainfall' trend witnessed during the monsoon period (June 1 to September 30) with Hyderabad district leading the state with 58% excess rains followed by Ranga Reddy and Nizamabad districts recording 47% and 38% excess rains respectively.

Meanwhile, the Telangana government on Saturday urged the Union government to extend financial assistance towards relief and restoration in districts affected by recent rains.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday spoke to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh over phone and requested him to ensure proper assistance to the state.

Rao told him that the heavy rains caused extensive damage to infrastructure and crops in various parts of the state.

Earlier, the Chief Minister held a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Mehmood Ali, Finance Minister Etela Rajender and Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma to review the losses. He went through the report prepared by various departments on the basis of information received from affected areas.

Mehmood Ali, Rajender and Sharma will visit New Delhi on Sunday to submit the report to Rajnath Singh and seek immediate assistance.

The Hindu reported that the Manjira river in Telangana witnessed a flash flood on Saturday after inflows into Singur reservoir increased to over 1.15 lakh cusecs by 10 am on Saturday.

The report adds:

Heavy rains in the western parts of Medak and Nizamabad districts since Friday night have created havoc with heavy damage to standing crops such as blackgram, soybean, redgram, cotton, jowar and others. Medak, Narayanakhed and Zaheerabad areas received very heavy rainfall inundating several low laying areas. Nyalkal received 224 mm rainfall followed by 193 mm in Raikod, 190 mm in Jharasangam and 170 mm in Munipally mandals.
