Following  protests by fellow students, Osmania Medical College on Monday decided to pay Rs 7 lakh ex gratia each to the kin of four deceased medical students who died on March 14 in a tragic road accident.

Dr. B. Prabhakar, principal, OMC, said that the students had agreed to call-off their strike, after the announcement.

However, the compensation has to be ratified by the state government as the total pay amount exceeded Rs 5 lakh per family, reported The Hindu.

The News Minute  had earlier reported that the students have been protesting throughout the week over the March 14 road accident that killed four students.

The students were returning from KIMS Amalapuram medical college with students returning from a sports meet.

On the ill-fated night of 14 March, five people, including the drunk driver, were killed and two students had been hospitalized in a serious condition. Another 18 students were also injured.

It was widely reported that according to many students, the root of the problem goes deeper than the driver being drunk that day. One point has come up again and again in these protests, that the administration has consistently failed to upgrade or even maintain its own buses. The college has just three buses, purchased in 1993, all of which are in a bad state of repair.
