Heavy rain inundates Hyderabad roads, IMD issues two-day warning

Heavy rain lashed Hyderabad on Monday, leaving several areas waterlogged and inundated. 

The showers, which began on Monday afternoon at some places, continued late into the night, with some areas even receiving showers on Tuesday morning. 

Reporting that the city received 41.8 mm rain till 8:30 pm, which is the highest on a single day this monsoon season, the Times of India stated that the rains were a result of increased intensity of the southwest monsoon.

“The city will continue to witness heavy rain for the next 48 hours. These rains will help bridge the rainfall deficit in Hyderabad since the start of July," Y K Reddy, director (in-charge), Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad told TOI.

Reports add that areas of Panjagutta, Begumpet, Secunderabad, General Bazaar, Malakpet crossroads, Mehdipatnam, Amberpet bridge, Devinagar in Neredmet division, Raghavendranagar, and Jyothinagar in Anand Bagh witnessed several water logging and were a traffic nightmare. 

Hussainsagar was also reported to be brimming with water as the water level almost rose to full tank level (FTL).

Many places also witnessed power cuts as strong winds broke tree branches, which in turn, fell on power lines.

Meanwhile, the IMD has said that the rain would continue till Wednesday evening, and issued a two-day alert.

"Heavy to very heavy rain very likely to occur at isolated places in all the districts of Telangana," the warning read.

"A well marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh with associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto 7.6 Km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height persists. It is very likely to intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours. The trough on Sea Level Chart now runs from Odisha to south Tamilnadu across Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Rayalaseema," the IMD said.

The maximum temperature recorded in a span of 24 hours over Hyderabad was 29 degree Celsius, while the minimum was 22 degree Celsius, Skymet Weather reported.

Many also took to social media, to post photos and videos of the rain.
