Girl who fell in borewell in Telangana dies despite rescue attempt

Mahender Reddy said Tuesday that Girija was dead and that efforts were being made to retrieve her body.For over 50 hours, rescue workers, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Singareni Collieries, made efforts to rescue Girija who fell into an abandoned borewell in Manchal village near Ibrahimpatnam.Officials had earlier said the girl was trapped at 45 meters. A parallel trench was dug to reach the desired level but a huge boulder hampered the rescue efforts.The rescue workers used all tools and technology available with them but could not rescue her, officials said. They had also pumped oxygen into the 300-feet deep borewell.Girija, daughter of a farm labourer, fell into borewell Sunday morning in a field when she had gone to relieve herself.The girl's father Nagaiah and grandparents were inconsolable. The girl's mother had died two years ago.With IANS
