In the wake of the brutal murder of a Dalit youth at Udumalpet recently, Puthiya Tamizhagam on Thursday demanded bringing in a legislation to prevent hono killing, with a special clause allowing confiscating the property of those involved in the crime.

Talking to reporters after meeting Kausalya, the 19-year-old widow of Shankar (22), who was killed Sunday last, party president K Krishnasamy said they have been demanding a special legislation for the past four years, considering "increasing incidents" of honour killing.

He said Rs 5 lakh compensation given to the bereaved family was "too meagre" and demanded the Centre and the state governments give Rs 1 crore to Kausalya, who is undergoing treatment at a government hospital, and Shankar's parents besides offering government jobs to his brothers.

Though Kausalya is recovering from her injuries, which required 36 stitches, she is upset as she was alone in the ward and there was no one to talk to, he said.

His party, with the support of human rights organisations and other political outfits will take out a procession at Udumalpet on March 26 to protest against the incident, he added.

Shankar and Kausalya were attacked by a gang with sickles in full public view on March 13 in nearby Tirupur district, resulting in the death of the husband.
