Criticizing the governor for not taking action, former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee said that Vidyasagar Rao cannot delay his decision to swear-in a chief minister in Tamil Nadu for an indefinite period.

He told The New Indian Express that though the Governor is waiting for the Supreme Court to give a judgement, he cannot delay the decision for this long. Generally, the Governor has to take a decision depending on the advice of the Cabinet but in this case, as the matter is sub-judice, he too is waiting for the judgement before permitting the swearing-in ceremony.  

He added that the Supreme Court verdict on the disproportionate assets case will most likely be on Thursday.

Sorabjee said that the governor would invite whoever has the numbers and then the candidate has to show the majority on the floor of the house.

Moreover, speaking to Tamil channels, he said that there is no provision to allow President’s rule in the State.

He said that it can only happen if the Governor sends a report and added that in such circumstances, President’s rule is not appropriate.

There were many media reports on Saturday, which stated that the governor sought legal advice of Sorabjee on the current political situation in Tamil Nadu.
