Decomposed bodies of a young man and a woman were on Wednesday found hanging from a tree at Athupakkam village in Nagapattinam district, police said.

They allegedly committed suicide, police said.

The deceased, belonging to different communities, have been identified as Gurumurthy (23) of Olakkudi village near Porayar and Saranya (24), of the same village, police said.

Some passers-by found the bodies after noticing a foul smell emanating from a bush in an isolated area. The bodies were decomposed, police said, adding, the deceased were reportedly in love.

Nagapattinam Additional SP Thanagadurai, Sirkazhi DSP Venkatesan, Porayar Inspector Murugavel and other officials visited the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

The bodies were later handed over to the parents and funerals were held in the evening separately, police said.

Police said the girl's relatives had earlier lodged a complaint that she was missing since April 16 and had alleged that Gurumurthy might have kidnapped her.

A case has been registered under section 174 of the CrPC (police to inquire and report on suicide, etc).
