A criminal defamation complaint has been filed by the Tamil Nadu government on behalf of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa against Rediff.com in the Madras High Court for an article speculating about her health.The complaint that names five people including the CEO, Editor and author of the article R Ramasubramanian and says the article was contrary to truth, and no verification done before publishing. On July 9 and July 10, Rediff had published two articles relating to Jayalalithaa's health, on speculations that she will fly out of the country for treatment.  Rediff has taken down the July 10th article titled 'Chennai media knew Jaya's health was not fine but kept mum'.The AIADMK and DMK governments of Tamil Nadu have a long history of filing criminal defamation complaints against the media. A Tamil magazine Nakkheeran is one of the litigants in a case being heard by the Supreme Court against criminal defamation in the country, the magazine had 211 cases against them on last count.
