PWF to boycott TN byelections, says polls will not be ‘free and fair’

The People's Welfare Front, the four-party alliance of the MDMK, VCK, CPI and CPM, has decided to boycott the elections to the Aravakurichi and Thanjavur assembly segments and bypoll to the Thiruparankundram assembly constituency.

According to The Times of India, the front feels that the elections will be held in an undemocratic manner.

“The elections were rescinded in two constituencies following large-scale bribing of voters, and the two parties have retained the same candidates. The elections will not be free and fair,“ MDMK leader and PWF coordinator Vaiko told mediapersons at his party headquarters.

While CPM and CPI leaders supported boycotting the polls, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan has not commented on the move.

In the run-up to the Assembly Elections in May, PWF had projected itself an alternative to the two major Dravidian parties. However, the front drew a blank.

PWF contested along with the DMDK and TMC. Actor Vijayakanth, the PWF’s Chief Ministerial candidate, who contested from Ulundurpet constituency lost the election and his deposit.

Since the polls, GK Vasan’s TMC has broken away from the PWF alliance, while there has been much speculation over whether the DMDK has snapped ties with the front.
