Even as media reports suggest that preparations are on for Sasikala to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, an online petition on Change.org against the CM-in-waiting has amassed over 100,000 signatures, and counting.

The petition, titled “Dissolve TN govt and Stop Sasikala from becoming Tamilnadu CM !!” and started by a person who has identified himself as Tamil Arasan PSR, had been signed by 112,000 by 8pm on Monday. The petition was launched on Sunday.

Stating that “Sasikala with many old money laundering case, should not be allowed to lead a Indian state. Moreover she has no political experience and has been reason for many corruption activities while Jaya was CM,” the petition asks that “Either OPS should continue as CM or the current govt to be dissolved and reelection to be conducted.” (sic)

The petition is addressed to the President of India, Governor of Tamil Nadu and the Chief Election Commissioner of India.

The comments section of the petition, however, is a spectacular display of class bias and misogyny. Many commenters deride her as a ‘servant’ or a ‘maid’, although several others point out to her ‘inability’ and corruption taint as well.

Sasikala was appointed as the leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party by MLAs in a meeting on February 5. Soon after, O Pannerselvam resigned as the CM of Tamil Nadu.

The governor has asked OPS to stay in the Cabinet until ‘alternative arrangements are made’.

Sasikala is expected to take oath as the CM soon.
