In an act of self-defence, two Nigerian women in the city fought off two drunk men who assaulted them on Tuesday night. The students were reportedly walking back to their hostel in Otteri area in Chennai when the duo were accosted by two inebriated men on a bike.

According to one report in the DTNext, the students began raining blows on the men even as they were screaming for help. Hearing their cries for help, residents and passers-by rushed to their aid.

As per a report in the Times of India, the women, who are soon completing their studies at two Chennai colleges, have informed the Nigerian embassy in the country. As they would be heading back to Nigeria, they had sought the help of the embassy in seeing the case through to its completion.

The attackers who tried to flee were chased down by the women who overpowered them. The women handed the attackers over to a police patrol team in the neighbourhood with the help of residents in the locality.

Speaking to the newspaper, the Kanchipuram Superintendent of Police said, “We have the two accused with us and are questioning them. We are waiting for a formal complaint to draft our first information report (FIR)." The police registered a case against the men under IPC 354 (a) (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (attack with hands) 294 (b) (abusing) and 506 (II) (criminal intimidation), apart from Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Women Harassment (Prevention) Act. A magistrate court is set to send them to jail on Wednesday.”
