Sagayam, the newly instated Vice-Chairman of Science City has been been brought in to inspect different kinds of mining activities in the State.Sagayam, who has recently been in the news for being transferred 24 times in his 23 year career, came into the limelight when he as a revenue officer came down hard on sand mining in Palar, in spite of the presence of mafia. He has now been appointed as Special Officer/Legal Commissioner to oversee a Public Interest Litigation on illegal quarrying of mines, which includes those from river beds and granite quarries, reported The Hindu.The decision to bring U. Sagayam, shows the seriousness of the High Court to crack down on illegal quarrying that has hit the State’s economy, said the report. In the petition, K.R. Ramaswamy alias ‘Traffic’ Ramasway asked how illegal quarrying was allowed without it being known to officials like revenue inspectors, police, commercial tax and revenue officials. He then filed for a directive to appoint Mr. Sagayam, to inspect the mines.
