Written by : TNM

The News Minute | January 21, 2015 | 12.20 pm ISTWhile a heritage zone just overlooks the main road, thousands of people cross through the streets of Mylapore in Chennai everyday. Even though the Chennai City Corporation has on its agenda a plan to make Mylapore a pedestrian-friendly spot, residents in the area have taken it up on their own to tackle the ‘immense’ traffic problems on the roads. Thus, a request to make Mylapore’s three Mada streets around Sri Kapali Temple as ‘one way’ streets have been made with the launch of a petition by Sridhar Venkataraman.According to the petition, the police could implement an idea of making the area a ‘walk only zone’ a few days a week for a few hours, a concept it says is implemented in heritage zones internationally.Mylapore area which is home to three important spots, Kapaleeswarara Temple, Santhome Basilicia and Ramakrishana Mutt have been spoilt by commercialisation , according to residents reported The Times of India. “In doing so, the benefits are great - local residents get smooth access to their homes, more shoppers come here because they enjoy the window shopping benefits in a quiet zone and the area of old houses, temple, shops and quaint nooks are freely open to tourists too,” said the petition.TweetFollow @thenewsminute
