Madras HC raises concern over lack of specific law to regulate hair transplant centres

Written by : TNM Staff

The Madras High Court has raised concern about the lack of a proper law to regulate hair transplant centres and beauty clinics in the state.

This comes in the wake of the death of a student due to a botched up surgery. On May 17, 2016, Santhosh, a medical final-year student died, after a hair transplant surgery at Advanced Robotic Hair Transplant Centre in Nungambakkam.

According to The Times of India, in 1997, Tamil Nadu Private Clinical Establishments (Regulation) Act was enacted but no specific law is there to regulate the transplant centres and beauty salons. So, a hair transplant clinic is another ‘shop’ under the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act.

The Madras High Court raised its concern when the Advanced Robotic Hair Transplant Global Hair Services wanted to reopen its shop in Chennai. The shop was sealed on June 1, 2016.

Santhosh got his hair transplant treatment done on May 15, 2016 and died two days later at the Christian Medical College in Vellore.

Justice N Kirubakaran stated that an act was necessary to regulate all the new types of clinics, including hair transplantation clinic, beauty clinics, spas and studios.
