Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been admitted to Apollo hospital in Chennai for more than two weeks and according to doctors, will be staying longer at the hospital. Meanwhile, over the last few days, the NIA has arrested several people from Kerala and Tamil Nadu with links to the Islamic State. These two events seem to have prompted BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to write a letter to Union Home minister Rajnath Singh asking the centre to impose President's Rule in Tamil Nadu and invoke AFSPA in certain districts including Chennai.

 

In a letter addressed to Rajnath Singh on Friday, Swamy wrote:

 

The Union Government should declare President’s rule in Tamil Nadu in view of the administrative disarray in the state following the indefinite hospitalization of the Chief Minister and her having to remain for health reasons incommunicado. A retired chief secretary has been allowed to conduct the business of the state.

 

During this ad hoc administrative situation, there has been an activization of the sleeper cell of the ISIS in the districts of Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Madurai and Kanyakumari and a collaborative and supportive action by the Dravida Kazhagam, left over LTTE and disruptive groups such as underground Naxalites, to create an upheaval in the state, causing a massive disorder and lawlessness. 

 

Therefore, I urge the Union Home Minister Mr Rajnath Singh to invoke Article 366 of the constitution and put the legislative assembly in suspended animation and impose the AFSPA in all southern districts as well as Chennai for a period of six months till Jayalaithaa is able to attend office.
