Four Dalit youth tied and beaten with slippers in TN village

Written by : TNM

After four Dalit youth were allegedly tied to a pole and beaten with slippers in full public view in a Vanniyar-dominated village near Kancheepuram, a fact-finding team has blamed police for their attitude in handling the case.  Four Dalit youth, including two Class 12 students, M Alexander and G Prasanth, were at a shop in the village when a group of bikers surrounded them and began assaulting them on February 28. After they were made to call their elder brothers and ask them to come to the spot, all four of them were tied to an electric pole and beaten up by the men in the village, reported New Indian Express. The alleged reason for the assault was reportedly the misbehaviour towards a 14 year-old girl belonging to the Vanniyar community by sprinkling powder on her face. However, according to an activist, even the girl did not know who the persons responsible for sending here abusive letters were, since they would always cover their faces.  According to activists, the Kancheepuram Taluk police took a delay of 18 days in filing an FIR against the persons belonging to the Vanniyar community following a complaint by the victims, said the report.
