The News Minute | September 23, 2014 | 00:15 am ISTAn Indian fisherman, a native of Thiruppalaikudi village in Ramanathapuram who had gone to Bahrain for fishing work was killed by the Qatar Navy when he had gone to retrieve nets used for fishing. Karthikeyan, aged 32 son of Thangaraj who had gone to Bahrain for fishing-related work six months ago was killed when the Qatar Navy opened fire on him. He had taken up a boat on a contract-basis from a localite and ventured out into the sea for fishing.On 20th September, he and his three friends ventured out into the sea. When a Qatar navy vessel was on routine rounds, the four fishermen cut their nets and went back. However, they returned on 21 September to retrieve the nets when the incident occurred. While he was killed in the attack, the other three were arrested.Thangaraj, father of the deceased Karthikeyan was also a fisherman. Karthikeyan is survived by his young wife and three children aged eight, three and one. He also had a brother and four sisters.The General Secretary of the fishermen community in Ramanathapuram, S. Karunamurthy said that it was because Sri Lanka attacked Tamil Nadu fishermen that they go elsewhere in search of jobs. “This shows that the fishermen of Tamil Nadu are not safe,” he said.He seeked immediate efforts to obtain the release of the fishermen and submitted a petition for the same.
