Drunk driver mows down 11-year-old in Tamil Nadu, two others injured

A Class VI student died after he was hit by a speeding car in Tiruttani on Monday. The car was being driven by a driver in an inebriated state, according to the police. The boy’s sister and mother were also injured in the incident.

The driver was arrested by the police and remanded in judicial custody. There was a blockade on the road after relatives sought compensation for the family.

Vasanth, the deceased 11-year-old, was going to his school with his mother J Nirmala and his younger sister, Haripriya, when the car hit them. A senior police officer told The New Indian Express that the incident happened around 8am, when a speeding car driven by a man named Mohan, hit three of them and the boy died in the accident. He hails from Arakkonam.

The three of them were rushed to Tiruttani Government Hospital where the doctors declared Mohan brought dead.

The parents of the other children caught Mohan and got him arrested by the police. Later, when he was tested, it was found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Mohan was traveling from Arakkonam to Thiruvalangadu.

Mohan and his family, hails from Thiruvalangadu. Mohan’s father works in a private company and had left for office early Monday morning.

The Times of India reported that the residents protested against the highways department demanding to lay speed breakers on the road.
